Error Code 0142

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525, that will not start up, I have run the pre-boot system assessment and there is an error.

Error Code 0142

Msg: Error Code 2000-0142

Msg: Hard Drive 1 - Self Test Unsuccessful Status: 79

Any idea how I can fix it or get my personal data before restoring.

Thank you

Remove the hard drive, mount it in a 2.5" SATA USB 2.0 case (newegg has many of these) and attach it to a working system to see what you can still read.

There's no point restoring on this drive, which is faulty - you'll need a new, 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive to replace it.

Best tactic:  order two drives.  One to replace the faulty one and the other to go into the case you'll need, for keeping backups going forward.
