Error message on boot

I have an Inspiron 5520 with Win 8 and for the last few days every time the system boots up I get the following message: "checking media (fail)". The message appears twice then the system boots normally. All the programs/apps work fine and I haven't experienced any kind of problem. The only "media" program I used was Windows Movie Maker and it works just fine.

I have seen the same issue on Windows forums but no solution was offered. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I contacted Dell via chat and they told me to run the pre-boot system assessment which didn't find any problem. I am still awaiting a reply to my e-mail sent after I ran the diagnostics.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :emotion-1:

Thanks.

After speaking with a Dell tech we determined that the issue is with the UEFI boot sequence (UEFI is basically the new BIOS) and below are the instructions that he sent me. Basically the boot sequence has to be changed to "legacy" so that the boot order can be changed from Network, Hard Drive, CD/DVD Drive to put Network last. After that the boot mode can be changed back to UEFI Secure Boot On.

Hope that helps and you are able to resolve the issue. :)

I would like to confirm if you can connect via network(NIC/LAN) using the machine.

Also, as a workaround here is what I can suggest for now

(Choose boot order while in Legacy boot setting):

1. Go to One Time Boot menu (F12)

2. Select Change Boot Mode Setting then choose Legacy Boot Secure boot off or on

3. Go to One Time Boot menu (F12) again and select  Enter Setup

4. Choose Boot tag and Legacy Boot should be selected.

5. Make sure that hard drive comes first on the list. If Network is appearing, select it and choose disable.

Save setup and restart the computer.

6. If issue is resolved then change back to EUFI secure boot.

Hi - I'm experiencing exactly the same with new Inspiron 1520 running Win 8.

Did you find anything out/make any progress with this issue?

Thanks

The response I got from Dell is to re-install Win 8 but I'm not sure whether that would solve the problem or do more harm.

I'm still "looking around" for answers on various forums.

Thank you for passing that along. It certainly seems to have resolved the issue. :)

I really wasn't looking forward to reinstalling W8. Glad I waited. ;-)

Thanks again.

I also am having the same error come up when booting up but have noticed that I am not able to access my libraries folders (documents, music, pictures or videos) when I try to open one of these folders a prompt comes up saying pictures.library-ms no longer working.  The media fail and not able to access my folders seem to have started happening at the same time.  Or s

I am not technical and have some questions with the instructions  you've provided.  When do I hit F12?  When booting up and it is "checking media" ?  Or do I access via some other method?

Thanks....
