Hello. Your screen shot shows that the usb mic is the default device. You have to select the Reatek mic as the default for it to work.
As far as adapters, there is no telling what will work, if anything. Dell should provide a list of adapters that are known to work with each model that has the user-unfriendly combo jack, but of course it won't.
See section 6 of the Headphone Jack FAQ for a couple of other adapters you could try, but in the end it might be easier to just get a usb headset or a smart phone headset.
Thank you very much. I think we have about decided that the problem is with that port. If you wiggle the adapter it picks up intermittent sounds from the mic. I've ordered an USB adapter that should work (fingers crossed).
