Failed Target Read Test and Smart Short Self Test
Laptop only 18 months old - ran the PC check up and got a failed Target Read Test and a failed SMART short self test. Surely my DELL computer should last more than 18 months? What can I do?

You need to replace the hard drive with a new one. If the system is under warranty, call Dell with error messages and they'll replace the drive. If it's out of warranty, you can buy any standard SATA notebook drive as a replacement.

Hi steffybing,
It is an issue with the Hard drive of your computer and need replacement. I am adding you as a friend; please accept my friend request and send me a personal message with the system Service Tag so that I can check the system warranty details and help you out with the repairs.
Glad to help.

Hi,
My new XPS 2710 has just produced failed messages for targeted read test WHD20-71V and smart short self test WHD16-RCF. I switched it on for the first time on 31st December, and it's already had a new motherboard. I hope it doesn't need more new parts. It's less than 2 months old! Thanks for your advice.
Regards,
Pauline.

Under warranty: Power on, press F12 and boot to the Dell diagnostics. Run an extended hard drive test and record the error (2000-0142, 2000-0151, etc.). Report the error to Dell and they'll replace the drive.
If you're out of warranty you'll need to purchase a new, 2.5" SATA notebook drive that's 7 or 9.5 mm in height to replace your faulty drive.
