Feedback while recording/Choppy recording

Hi! I have a D430, with Windows XP Pro. I need help solving a problem about recording using my line-in. My recording software is SoundForge 8. My problem is that everytime I try to record using my line-in, I get terrible feedback on the recording. The recorded sound is choppy and has feedback that would make you cringe. I'd appreciate help from anyone. Many thanks!

I have a feeling it is a configuration problem in Soundforge. I don't have that software and am not aware of its settings (I use Sonar).

What do have attached to your line-in jack, perhaps a turntable or cassette deck? If it is a mixer, guitar amp or device that is plugged into an a/c outlet then the noise could be due to a ground loop. If you unplug the computer and run it on just its battery, if the noise goes away it is the ground loop.
