"hal.dll is missing or corrupt" error message.
I was using an Inspiron 6000 with windows xp. I received multiple error messages while running the computer telling me that various files were corrupt or unreadable and to run the chkdsk utility. The title of the error messages was "Jaucheck.exe - corrupt file". I also could not update Microsoft security essentials and received an error message numbered 0x80248011. I used error-checking in the c drive properties and restarted the computer. It was then when I received the hal.dll error message and the computer will not boot. I ran a diagnostic test but it passed. I also requested backup discs from Dell but I have not heard anything yet. How likely will they send the discs? How long does it usually take for a response from them and for it to be shipped? Is there anything else i can do right now? Thanks in advance.

Make sure the disk is ok before restoring or re-using it.
Best check is running the diagnostic utility of the disk manufacturer.
These are available on the website of the manufacturer and usually
require to burn in it on a CDROM so it can be used to boot the computer.

I received the xp disk and was able to get the computer to boot again. Is there anything I should do now to ensure that this is fixed?
Also, when I boot up, I get the option to choose between the old OS and the new one. How do I make this I stop screen from coming up?

Jahmbi,
Reatsrt your computer and press F2 when you see the Dell screen. This will enter the bios. Look for boot sequence. Mak the boot sequence...
CD/DVD Rom
hdd hard drive
usb ports
network
Save and exit.
Insert the disk and try again

Why would I have to insert the disk again if I got the computer to boot? Everything seems fine. The only problem is being asked what operating system to use when I start the computer. I'm asked to choose between "Windows XP Home", the one that was just created from the disk, and "Micorsoft Windows XP Home", the old one. How do I get the message to stop displaying? Do I have to change the boot.ini file?

Sorry. I don't know how to remove that. Maybe a new thread and someone can help you quicker, since the subject reads about .hal being missing
