Hard drive Error 0146

Hey guys,

Just looking for some advice please, So i have a Dell inspiron 1564 bought in 2010.

Yesterday the laptop failed to load windows (stuck at the loading windows screen)

I preformed a system diagnostic and it failed on the Hard drive error code 0146.

So i have no issues in buying a new hard drive if this one cant be saved, i have all files backed  but can i get some help with two questions please?

1) Can i use any sata laptop hard drive bought from a local retailer?

2) I don't have the Dell disks the came with the laptop (lost in a house move) however i built a desktop last year and have a Windows OEM  disk with exactly the same OS as my laptop (Windows 7 64 bit)

Can i install the OS onto my new hard drive using  my windows OEM disk and use the Key code on the sticker underneath my laptop?

Thanks guys

Hi john0zz,

Yes, you can use any local SATA drives, provided they are SATA I or SATA II with 12.7mm size.

You can also use the Windows OEM disc that you have, provided it was sent by Dell.

If you have any further questions please reply to the same.

I think you mean 9.5 mm or slimmer -- 12.5 mm drives won't fit.

Hi and thanks for the replies. The thing is I don't have any disks from Dell as I said unfortunately I lost them in a house move. The Windows Disk I have is a standard OEM Disk that I bought from an online retailer for custom PC build. This disk has the same OS as my laptop had. Will I not be able to use this disk with the key code sticker under my laptop then? Thanks again

You can, but will need to activate windows (which may require calling Microsoft).

Mount the drive in an external USB 2.0 case and attach it to a working system.  CHances are you will be able to recover some, if not all of your documents.
