HDD bottleneck for system?
Hello everybody,
I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) with following properties: Core i5 2410M, 4GB RAM, HDD 640GB (Samsung HM641JI), AMD Radeon HD 6470M 512MB.
I always noticed that the system runs quite slow if there is a lot of HDD activity. For example, if I unpack 2 7zip archives simultaneously (about 3GB each), the other programs run very slow (starting IE9 sometimes takes about 30 seconds!).
Now, I looked closer to usage of other hardware components, and this is what I have:
- CPU usage is less than 10%
- Still about 1.5GB RAM available (0MB free though...)
Furthermore, I have all recent drivers installed, and removed several software packages such as standard Dell media programs.
Does anyone have a suggestion? (over-consuming program, faulty driver, ...)

If you run your Windows experience index, you will indeed find that the hard drive is the slowest device in the system, and it will bottleneck the system. There's nothing wrong - that's just the case with a conventional hard drive in just about any new system these days. The CPU and video chip are faster in throughput than the hard drive is.
If you want a faster system, consider a solid state drive. But before you jump on that, realize that replacing the hard drive in this system is far from easy (it requires removing the mainboard, which in turn requires a complete system teardown - everything inside has to be removed).
