HDMI Port

I just  bought an a new 17 inch INSPIRON laptop. I plug in the HDMI cable connected to my TV and get a picture but the sound is awful   I really would like the audio to be passed from my laptop to the TV and use the sound system of the TV  But how do I do that

Thanks Jim  This is a brand new laptop from Dell and the Bios and drivers should be the latest  However there is a setting on the HDMI input to pass the audio through. Turning that OFF  allows the audio to come from the computer HDMI and out from the optical of the TV through my stereo  system

So it seems I have it working

I wish Dell would provide a "user manual" for this high end laptop

Hello. See the HDMI Audio FAQ for tips.

HDMI audio is controlled by a driver that comes with the laptop's graphic (video) driver, so try installing the latest version of that driver, or an older version than the one you have now. You could also try updating the BIOS.

If all of that fails to rectify the issue, you could connect the laptop's headphone port to the aux port of the TV if it has one, and then use laptop's audio software to tailor the sound quality, for example WavesMaxx.
