Help with Inspiron 8600

I bought a 1gb memory module off of Ebay and it has the following specs:

-1024MB
-333Mhz
-SODIMM (DUL IN-LINE MEMORY)
-Non ECC
-200 PIN
-64 x 8 Low Density

Right now I have 2 x 256mb modules and I took one out and replaced it with this 1gb stick. It seemed to work ok, and I left it on overnight. In the morning I noticed that there was a black screen with an error message. I don't remember exactly what it said, but it had something to do with the memory. I turned the computer off, and rebooted but instead the middle LED light would blink 3 times and the laptop would not turn on. I replaced the ram back to the original 2 x 256mb and it worked fine.

Do I need to have 2 x 1gb modules for this to work? I tried every combination but it didn't seem to work. Did I buy the wrong ram? Any help would be appreciated...

DDR333 is correct indeed. What brand ram did you buy?

Hello,
This is my first post ever. I have an 8600 with 2 x 256mb for a total of 512mb of ram. Does anyone know what the max can be for memory? Can I add memory so that I have 2 g's? Where is the best place or brand to buy the memory? Is there anything I need to know besides removing the original and inserting the new?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Inspiron 8600 can support 2 GB of memory. You may buy it from Dell at following web page

You just need to insert the new modules and thats all that you need to do. Check following for instructions.

Hope that helps.
