How long should pre-boot system assessment take?

I have an almost five-year-old Latitude E5400, out of warranty, that I suspect has a hardware problem. Randomly, CPUs pin 100% and system slows to a crawl.

I've been running the pre-boot system assessment for maybe an hour, it's stuck on the memory test, shows only 5% complete. Is that a sign that something's wrong?

Hi,

I would suggest you to run a thorough test on the hard drive and memory. You can download SupportAssist from the link below and run the PC CHECKUP to check for issues

Please let me know the findings.

Passed all checkup tests.

Something still seems wrong. Running nothing but antivirus and a web browser, eventually the CPU hits 100% and the system becomes unusable.

I've tried several browsers and replaced Norton with Avast, still happens.

Windows 7 SP 1 32-bit, 4GB RAM, 219GB hard drive with 49GB free.

Hi,

We need to check if the issue is caused due to any application installed on the system. So please clean boot the system using the link below and check if the issue reoccurs.

Also, please see that No external device are connected to the system.

In addition, remove and reseat the memory on the computer to check if there is issue resolution.

I deleted 30GB worth of junk files and the problem went away.

Windows (7 SP1 32-bit) showed 20GB free before that, but I suspect that's wrong since I wasn't doing anything to create so many scratch files. I didn't get a "disk full" message from Windows, Norton, or Avast (replaced Norton trying to eliminate possible causes), either.
