How to add partition?

Question

I just purchased an Inspiron E1505 and would like to create a new logical 'D' drive.  From what I've read, I should be able to do this from XP's Disk Management  by right clicking on the current C drive and adding it.  Unfortunately I don't see anything that allows me to do this.  I know Dell installs a couple partitions for PC Restore and diagnostics.  Is this affecting my attempts?  What is the correct way to add another drive without completely reinstalling XP?  What's the easiest way to map the CD drive to 'E'?   Thanks in advance for your help.

You can only create a partition (for the new logical drive) in the free space. Your drive should have no free space.

You can buy software that can change the partitions (e.g. reduce the size of C to make room for D) without losing data. Partitian Magic is one that comes to mind. Others can recommend a good choice.

You can also delete the PC restore partition and reuse that space. I have done that before. But makes sure that you can live without it before deleting that.

My I6400 came with the backup partition (16G or so out of 60). I deleted that along with the PC restore partition and used the space to make several parititions for Linux.

I did the same, and rewriting the master boot record wipes out the DellPCrestore. But i have the discs which i called and got for free.

Mapping a drive/parition to another drive letter in XP. Right-click My Computer>Manage>Drive Management You should see a map of your drives and partitions. Right click on a partition or drive. You should see an option to change the drive letter.

Or you can simply use the backup partition (D) without doing anything else.
