How to exit Standby

I have inspiron 1300 laptop with windows xp home.

I have never had to use this facility until a short while ago. I went into standby mode by turning off and chosing standby. To exit I pressed the power button, my desktop came back on but with no icons and no task and start button. My mouse arrow was on screen but frozen, I waited a little while but nothing else happened, no keys would work and mouse still frozen.

How do I exit standby?

Had a look in the manual which referred to the power options and advance tab, I have it set to go into standby by closing the laptop, but I get the same effect when opening. Can anyone help please.

Hitting any key should bring you out of Stand-by.  Hibernation requires using the power button.

Well I tried the standby mode again, and this time when I lifted the display I got a black screen, I hit any key and the power button and nothing happened, am I supposed to wait a while for it all to come back on the screen.
