Howto verify backup recovery disk?
Hello,
I just received my M101z. Now it seems this is my first Dell not being delivered with installation disks. In the mean time I figured out to use DataSafe to make a backup of the recovery partition. Now I made one on an SD card. So far everything went successful.
As I not immediately trust this DataSafe tool reporting that the recovery disk was made successfully, I also wanted to try this so I restarted my PC, hit the F12 key to run the boot menu and selected the removable drive to boot from. Nothing special happened, it seems to just boot windows, is this as expected? I thought it would start some kind of setup? How can I really verify that the recovery disk I made is o.k.?

Hi Kris,
I just ordered an M101z myself, and am looking forward to recieiving it (next week I hope), however I have experience with Dell DataSafe Local Backup as well as general PC knowledge :-)
At the present time, it is not possible to boot a computer from an SD-Card. I am actually suprised the Dell DataSafe allowed you use that as a backup source. You would need to use a USB Flash Drive (some people call them 'thumb' drives as they look like a thumb poking out of your PC) as the destination source. Computers are able to boot from those. When you enter the restore program, it does not boot Windows but goes into a recovery enviroment. So it is probably safe to assume that you did not do a succesful backup. Hopefully you can re-do it with a USB Flash drive. Good luck!

Hello,
Indeed the Dell datasafe tool allowed me to use an SD card as backup device. When the backup finished I checked the contents of the SD card as far as I can see it is the data as present on the recovery partition of the hard drive.
Alhtough I was not able to enter the recovery environment when trying to boot from this SD card. I also own a USB multicard reader. What I will do next is inserting the SD card in this reader and retry booting from the this USB multicard reader. If still not working I will try to make the backup again using this USB card reader.
I will post the results one of the coming days.

Hello,
In the mean time I was able to do some additional tests. I have made the backup using Dell datasafe on an SD card directly plugged into the laptop's SD card slot. It seems this is allowed by the Dell datasafe tool. However I was not able to boot from this SD card when plugged into the laptop's SD card slot. Now I have plugged this same SD card into an USB multicard reader that on its turn is plugged into one of the laptop's USB ports and this works fine.
So, you can burn your backup using the SD card slot of the laptop but for system recovery you must use such USB card reader and boot from the USB port.

i have made factory backup on DVDs using dell backup and recovery. now i want to verify these disks that it will work or not in case when i will recover. please help

See if you can boot the system from the disc set -- put the disc in the drive, press F12 at powerup and see if the system will boot from the first disc in the set.
