I hate my M1210

Well, where do I begin?

When I purchased my XPS M1210 back in January 2007, I was so very excited.  Furthermore when it arrived I was amazed at the speed of everything - I couldn't fault it.

Last year, October 2007 I had the top tray replaced since I found that the buttons on the front didn't actually push in very well.  It was replaced, and then if I picked up or moved the system it just shut down!  They came out the following day to replace it again!

So for the last 4-6 weeks, my laptop has been running all day for any time from 3 to 5 hours and then it freezes.  Seriously, just the slowest response I have ever seen since the days of my very first desktop which was a Pentium 90!

Generally the machine has slowed down too.  It came to a serious situation when I had noticed that the base of the laptop was extremely hot, I mean it would burn to touch.  The laptop then just turned itself off!  So I turned it back on, and guess what - it took 10 mins to boot up and then was still running like a dog.

So I reinstalled Vista, which hacked me off, but best to try the software first eh!  Nope, the same thing happened the following day, in actual fact, I have been getting video driver errors too, I have the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400.  At one point, I even saw my Vista splash screen telling me my copy of windows wasn't original (and I subscribe to Microsoft Action Pack).

Two days ago I called Dell, I got transfered from India to the North American call centre.  Then I was cut off, so I called again and this time someone answered my call and had me run through the Boot up, F12 diagnostic thing, which took forever and a day.  After about 20 mins he told me to leave it running and then call back.

This stressed me out so I let it run - no errors.  And then I just dealt with it getting slow after about 3/5 hours.

Today I felt like calling again, after 40 minutes on the phone, I now have an engineer booked, and they're going to replace my heat sink and fan.  I fear that this isn't going to solve the problem though, I saw on the following forum that lots of people have issues with heat, and the freezing of Windows (or whatever) and it's a graphics card issue.

Seems a few of us have had troubles here - I wondered if anyone has gotten this resolved once and for all?

And how many problems does one have to have before Dell will consider a replacement?  I don't see how spending £1500 on a laptop and then having it go like this after 12 months or so is acceptable.  Granted we get parts replaced... but somehow I don't think this is going to fix it.  Any tips I might get in proving this will be most welcome.

Oh, and if there's a number for UK XPS support.... that would be nice - rather speak to someone in my own country who might possibly understand what I am saying.

Well, to be honest, this is a user-to-user forum, so any issues you have directly with Dell needs to be dealt with via voice, chat, or email directly with them.

As for what it takes to get a system exchanged, it has to be a pretty serious issue. My stepdaughter had a freak issue of getting massive electric jolts from the keyboard. That warranted a hazard capture immediately. As for parts, it's normal several major components being replaced in a short span with the issue still remaining unresolved.

Finally, don't immediately associate your issues with a particular thread in a forum. A lot of times, symptoms can seem similar and have extremely different causes.

i called dell a few weeks ago to tell them that my m1210 was getting so hot i couldn't put it on my lap. They offered to give me a replacement without even asking.

I dunno tho, i have 4 yr/complete care warranty, not sure if that helps with their decision making.

I have the 3 year XPS NBD support... not that this should make a difference.  It's funny how you got such a quick turnaround and a vastly different response to me.  Are they replacing like for like or did you choose an alternative system?

It took me 4 x 40 minute phone calls, and I have an engineer visiting tomorrow to replace Fan, Heat Sink and now the Motherboard!

Hmmmm..

Hi kookachoo,

U r not alone. I am facing exactly the same issues... like u mentioned. Its overheats so much that u just forget about putting it on ur lap. I use it on a table...enough space for the Air vents to take in ample air. But still it overheats.
The normal temperature range is 75+ Degree celsius. Its under normal conditions...light browsing, some apps. Thats it.
If i open some heavy apps like photoshop,Flash and all. I bet it freezes up quiclky in an hour or so. Then i have to shut it down for some mins. Let it cool..and then start again. Very annoying.

Remember, i have a Basic configuration. No discrete GPU. Like in ur Case. I wonder what will happen if i add a GPU :).
Sure it would die.

I think there is seriously something wrong with this model. Only yesterday night..CPU temp went upto 95+ Degree celsius. Am sure in long run this laptop will die for sure.

I lodged a complaint with Dell today only. The Tech guy first told me to check my Air vents...then Dell Diagnostic.Same old stuff like u said. But when i assured them that everything is fine from my side...only then they arranged for a technician tommorow. I am sure he will probably replace heat sink, fan..may be MOB. But i am afraid if it would solve my problem. There is really something wrong with this model.

Will post more..after i get this checked by the engineer.

Honestly i regret buying this lappy...just like u :smileymad:
