I8600 display: "smeared" or "ghosting" effect
Hello,
it's about two months I have an Inspiron 8600 (relevant specs below). It's a
week or so that I've been noticing image "smearing" on the display when moving
windows or scrolling texts. It's quite noticeable, especially in comparison
with other Dell laptops my colleagues have at work. Also, the "ghost" images
seem more apparent if I reduce the luminosity of the display.
Not that it bothers me very much seeing a "wake" when moving/resizing windows,
but it's pretty annoying when scrolling texts: even rather slow scrolling can
make small texts unreadable.
So, I tried plugging in an external CRT monitor, just to check whether it's a
problem with the video controller: no such an effect on that. I also tried to
switch off all Windows/XP "effects" for moving/resizing windows, but the
problem of course persists when scrolling texts.
I am fairly sure the problem has developed recently, though I can't exclude
with absolute certainty I wasn't blinded by excitation when this laptop was
delivered (but so would have been all the others I showed it off to...).
I thought such a "smearing" or "ghosting" effect was a thing of older displays
(pixels of this i8600 should have a 25 ms response time, if I am not mistaken),
and in any case it's the first time I hear of such a rapid degradation of an
LCD (not that I am an expert... so that doesn't count...).
Anybody has any ideas/experiences? Just a defect of the display? (But
searching on this forum and elsewhere, I didn't find reports of similar
problems). Or the display got damaged somehow? (Heat sources, bumps - but I've
been careful with this expensive appliance; what else?)

I have the same screen and laptop and I also have the smearing when moving around windows but I think that is normal, I had that on my i8200 also and I think that is just a TFT problem, altjough I would be glad to get rid of it.
I am using the DELL drivers for my FX5200 right now. I tried to update to the newer one but the effect you discripe got worse. When moving around windows the CPU load went up to 100% and the windows only moved slow so I am back to the DELL drivers. Hopefully DELL will release new ones soon.
Also I don't know maybe it is also a setting problem of GFX card.
The ghost stuff I cannot really reproduce what do you mean exactly. I have the LCD at full brightness btw

sorry, the "ghosting" effect you mention is that I was just to trying the
describe the "smearing" effect with a different word... and being English not
my mother tongue...
The smearing is most annoying for me when scrolling text: it becomes tiring for
my eyes, after a while. I have seen the screen of an Inspiron 8200 with UXGA,
and the effect is much less pronounced. Also, even on a two-years old Latitude
C-something, the effect is somewhat more tolerable, in my view (as for the
specs, I don't remember the exact model right now: can check tomorrow at work;
but I do remember it has a 1440x1050 display).
So, it appears that that effect is normal for an I8600 WSXGA screen. I am just
wondering if owners of WUXGA screens are happier. That might be a useful piece
of information for those pondering whether to purchase either one.

Now as you pointed it out I really know what you mean.
The display really kind of smears and that really suxx. I alos noted the smearing when browsing up and down in explorer for example and I am very sure my i8200 with the 1600x1200 screen didn't have that effect at all or at least not this bad.
I also tried out playing UT2003 and the picture is really horrible. When moving orientation is almost impossible.
I am really kind of sitting between chairs now cause DELL was very generous and I got the laptop for free and on the other side the display got really worth. In windows the normal work is really great but gaming is almost impossible.
I have to think about it what to do.
Any suggestions
