Hello,

What are the normal or defaults you recommend you set the low and high speeds to?

I have mine set to:

Slow Start 49'c stop at 37'c
Fast Start 52'c...

Could you add a default setting? And also, is it possible to make a Fariheight one? That would be neat...

To both you and mattlohrer wanting Farenheit readings: the processor chips are rated by Intel in degrees Centegrade and paying attention to a Centegrade reading for chip longevity makes the most sense and aids setting your temp points for the fans.

No. I never used Visual Basic.

No. I think this would cause too much confusion to most users. Secondly, the temperature sensor is based on degrees celsius, so it is just straight forward to adjust the temperature monitor threshold values in degrees celsius, too.

Well said. I agree - Intel specs in degree Celcius, and that would be what you want to set temp points in to not get confused.

First Michael Henze - i8kfangui is a fantastic program.

Unfortunately when I have it set to autostart and windows XP loads it pops up an error saying "giveio driver not loaded". From what I can see from monitoring the boot up (using bootvis) the i8kfangui.exe is loading before the driver can load. The program boots almost as soon as windows comes up but the loading of services (is it loaded as a service?) takes a while longer. If I then start up the program from a shortcut it works fine - by that time the driver has loaded. If I also run the driver install program again it says it is already running.

Is there any way to fix this? Perhaps writing in a check to wait for the driver to load first (with a resonable time-out), or delaying the start of the program a second or two?

Also will you be writing in another temp checkpoint to go from fast --> slow? At the moment the CPU has to cool down to the turn off temp before reseting the fans to slow (off then slow). I would prefer to run the fans at slow all the time (they are fairly quiet) and this can be achieved by setting the off temp to the lowest setting. The only problem is when the fans go to fast (under heavy load) they will not reset to slow as the CPU will not reach the "off" temp. A "return to slow" setting would be ideal for this.

You were right! It worked!

The driver had to be changed from "Automatic" to "System". I suspect this change was made by bootvis.exe which is supposed to increase your boot speed on XP by up to 50% (it's from Microsoft for more info check out - http://www.warp2search.net/article.php?sid=1199), it does this by changing some of the priorities I assume.

For others - the explanation was correct ("Display all devices" is actually "Show hidden devices").

I leave in France and I recently owned a new INSPIRON 8100 with W2K and updated it with Win XPpro with display and fans problems.

You give an answer on my problem with your utility ! Thanks a lot to give us solutions.

We should ask Dell to employ person's like you to give answers that we are waiting for because we payed our laptops and they did'nt give us solutions for technical problems.

The next I buy is TOSHIBA, I buy the 8.1k to replace my TECRA 8000 TOSHIBA.

Glad to see your startup giveio is settled. About the fans going from high to low; did you set the high fan to a higher cutoff than the low fans start? Then the low fan might kick in after the high turns off.

is it possible to make the taskbar icon show the temp?
about half the time thats the only reason I open the program, I leave it running, controlling my fans by the temp, works great, but I'd still like to monitor the temp just with a glance.

I used your program on my 8000 for the first time and am really impressed. Still have to tweak the settings as my math tells me 50C is about 105F. Ouch. This is on a 700mhz PIII. My 800mhz PIII Desktop with fans galore never goes above 100F when it is worked hard. Thanks for prolonging the life of my notebook. I'm planning on hanging on to it for quite some time.

I would also like to make a third request for Celius temp on the systray IF possible someday. If this is not easily possible, then don't worry about it, for I know how much you are getting paid for this hard work of yours.

I do have a questiong concerning the processor and Win2K.
When I had 98SE on this unit, I also had the Waterfall program to idle the processor. I thought I read somewhere in an earlier post that Waterfall is not needed with Win2K as that program does idle the processor. Is this true?

I can confirm that windows 2K has built-in CPU idling.

To see for yourself, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to get into Task Manager, then select Processes. The System Idle Process is probably first on the list.
