icons for documents wont show up

i recently did a system restore on my computer (windows 7) and now none of my documents, pictures, music, ect. are showing up.  The programs and foulders are still all there and work fine, its just the documents are missing.  The foulders that used to contain these documents now say there are 0 items and 0 items hidden, yet it wont let me make new documents with the same names in those foulders.  I can even access the documents by opening them up specifically through word or accell or paint or whatever.

please help, im not a tech guy i have no idea whats wrong or how to fix it and my warrenty ran out years ago so dell wont help me

Hi,

Try downloading Recuva available on the internet. This is a data recovery tool.

Hi,

Welcome to the Community. In a tricky situation beacuse it involves your personal data. You may want to try restoring the computer back to the to the date it was working fine, using system restore and see if that helps.

Thank you
