Inspiron 1300 Overheating
My laptop is about 2 years old. A few months ago I upgraded the RAM (from 1MB to 2MB) and the power supply chord also died around that time, so I replaced it with the same type of power chord purchased from Dell.
Since I made these two changes, my laptop frequently overheats, usually within the first hour of use...and shuts down. I am assuming it can't handle the RAM upgrade. What can we done to correct this? Is there a newer/better fan, or some kind of cooler I can use?

possibly be the cpu fan, or not enough thermal grease under the cpu....did you check the cpu temp, like running core temp

Not abusing the notebook by using it in your lap would obviate the need for the "fix" as well. The fix is fine, but it's the abuse that's causing the problem in the first place.
Notebooks should be used on a hard, flat surface - NOT in the lap. Lap use invites overheating by blocking the cooling vents and by causing all sorts of lint and other small particles to be taken into the system.
