Inspiron 1501 Battery Problem
I have had a Inspiron 1501 for about three years and only recently I've been having troubles with my battery. The battery is fully charged but when I try to turn on my laptop with it in, it starts up and then 3 seconds later I hear this little 'ting' noice and it shuts off. Even after trying a couple times the same thing happens. Sometimes it doesn't even start to turn on at all. The only way I can turn on my laptop is by taking the battery out and using only the AC plug, and even that the odd time doesn't work. Once the laptop is turned on and loaded I am able to put the battery back it and it will charge normally. I have no warning messages or anything on the laptop and I have taken it to a computer show before and they don't know what is wrong. Do I simply need a new battery?
Thanks
Steph

I suggest that before replacing the battery, i would go into the system BIOS and see if AC Adapter errors have been turned off. You can enter the BIOS by starting the system and tapping the F2 key. If the BIOS does have an option for AC adapter errors, make sure to enable it. Save the changes and reboot.
If all of a sudden the system starts giving error messages about the AC adapter then i would replace that first.
Otherwise if AC adapters was already enabled or the system doesnt give any errors regarding the adapter then you knw it isn't the AC adapter
You should also update the BIOS downloading from the following link.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R174470&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=13120&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=9&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=1&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=236967
If the BIOS update will ask you to connect the battery and AC adapter before completing. If either the AC adapter or battery is failing then the system may not allow you to update the battery. At this point i would look to replace the battery if the system is not giving AC adapter errors.
If the battery is nearly three years old then you have had pretty decent life with it. As frustrating as it might be with it failing.
I hope that i have helped here and let us know what you find out.

Hi Terry,
So I have done everything you suggested and it seems to have worked. I have no trouble turning on my laptop anymore however, whenever I do I shut down it turns off but 10-15 minutes later it will turn itself on again. Do you have any suggestion on how to fix this problem?
Thanks,
Stephanie
