Inspiron 1545 Dual Core Error code 4400:011A. Msg: SCSI_0-000_DISK_GENERIC_COMPACT_FLASH - Target not ready

After a lengthy time with support yesterday,(DELL support) with regards to my laptop spiratically booting into windows I came to the conclusion that DELL support really does not know what they are talking about. (Some of the team perhaps)

I was told that rather than the issue being a hardware issue, it was indeed my Operating System and to have my credit card handy.

I was appauled.

He would not listen to me telling him it was NOT my Operating System and I was not paying to have it installed back onto my laptop beause DELL graciously sent me a Vista Home cd with drivers etc.

Chat suppport is down so I can't even chat them up and tell them how upset I am.

I ran diagnostics and system tests without the help of support and the above error keeps repeating itself.

I can run it in safe mode without a problem, but when it comes to recovering with the disk, there is no hard drive to install it to on my laptop.

I am hoping someone here can help me as DELL support really did not listen to me.  They probably are reading from a symptom book or something.

Please help.

Oh and a little fyi - I have an xps I purchased from DELL and the exact same thing happened. I had to go out and buy another hard drive and it works perfectly. The only thing with the laptop is the hardware is under warranty for another 2 years and I am not about to buy another hard drive if this is the issue. They even wanted to reinstall the OS on the XPS. (which wasn't even the issue) How funny is that?

Seems DELL just wants to pass the buck as before.

What type of drive is in the system - a conventional hard drive, or a solid state drive?

p.s. it just booted into windows, accepts the password, hangs on the welcome screen then goes black.

Ugh

It's likely the error simply means you had no flash card in the system to test.

What operating system is on the hard drive?  Does it not boot at all, or does it boot sporadically?  Or does the system fail to power up at all.

Be more specific with the symptoms and someone may be able to help.

Did you run an extended hard drive test (takes about two hours)?

Next thing would be to check the BIOS setup to see if there's a hard drive listed.  If there isn't, try reseating the drive - if it's still not found, the drive is toast - replace it.

If the drive IS found, let the diagnostics run, boot to the 32-bit diags afterward and run an extended drive test.  Either way it sounds likely the hard drive is toast.

Make sense?

The weird thing about this all is the the drive does show in the bios, but not when I try to re install the OS.

I have reseated the drive and still get errors.

DELL support doesn't seem to listen.

Hoping they read this because the person I was speaking to said it WAS NOT a hardware issue.

I am so glad you are helping me understand.

I did run the test over night and received that error.

The OS is Vista.

It sporadically will boot into Windows. More not.

The laptop wasn't used for a couple weeks and turned it on and nadda.

Tried to install the OS but there is no drive recognised, but yet all my files etc are there.

I should also state that the error when booting up is "no boot sector on internal drive"

Try some other OS (something free, like Ubuntu. No need to spend money on this). If you can install it on a hard-drive, and if it boots, then Vista is the problem. Otherwise, your HDD/SSD is simply toast. The simple solution is to buy a new HDD. If you are willing to wait, give it to the warranty dudes, and tell them the problems that the hard drive has (it's either corrupted or damaged). I

Your answers are extremely evasive and your post not at all clear.  That is why you've had trouble communicating.

Here's what to do if you want to solve the problem rather than rant:

1.  Re-install the drive.

2.  Re-run the diagnostics.

3.  RECORD, EXACTLY, the NUMERIC error - in the format 2000:0000 that results.

4.  REPORT the exact error to Dell.

They will then replace the drive.

Had you done that initially, you'd have had no cause to rant about the problem.

No hard drive is recognized to install to.

Wish there was.

DELL doesn't listen to me PERIOD!

I have requested a new hard drive over and over but no one listens.

I have a 2 year warranty.

Why don't they just send one out and I send back the corrupt one?

See if that works?

NOPE

My daughter is paying over a grand for this for school and now what does she do?

You never answered the question as to what happened when you ran the extended diagnostic on the drive.

There was an error recognizing the hard drive.

Yes I did and the buck was passed.

Finally called again today and they are sending a new hard drive.

They had told me that they "pass the buck" until they get a certain error.

Guess what???

Started up the laptop today and got that error.

Didn't the previous support so it was passed as an OS error.

Did everything prior with Dell and just happened to give the "correct" error.

My ranting did indeed pay off.
