power off the computer and connect it to the router. The router only has four ports so you can only hook up 4 computers to it. power on the computer and if it does not detect your computer open up network and sharing center. run the setup a connection or network.

Dave is pretty good at this. I just wanted to say that I have a Studio 1737 that has Windows 7 64-bit on one partition and Vista Home Premium 64-bit on another partition and I have no problems connecting to my Linksys WRT54GS.

I already did that and it still does not work. And i went and to the place where it says look for networks and enabled it.  One thing i'm curious about is with the others all the lights of the particular port are on but when the notebook is connected the lights just flash on every couple seconds or so.

I was just trying what you said to do and i noticed i didn't tell you that it always says the network cable is unplugged, but no it is not.

There should be two little lights at the cable connection on the computer one to indicate you are connected and the other to indicate data flow. It you are not seeing both of these it can be an indication that the actual NIC inside the computer is bad.

One more thing to check. is to boot into the bios and make sure it is enable there. Most are by default but it needs to be checked. Also you need to check in device manager to make sure the driver is loaded. There should be a listing for the NIC and there should be no !.? or X next to it.

Disconnect your ethernet cable. Download the drivers to another computer and then put them on a flash drive or CD and install them on the Studio 17

I just remembered.! When I installed Windows 7 on my Studio 1737 I had an issues. You need to download and install Broadcom BCM5784M LAN or better known as Broadcom Netlink Gigibit Ethernet (64-bit drivers)

I cannot remember if I had to install this in the compatibility mode or not.

Right click on the drivers file, then left click properties, compatibility. Select Vista SP2. Right click on the drivers, then left click run as administrator.

This should install your ethernet adapter.

No there are no lights at the plug even when it is connected to the modem alone and the internet is working.  And as far as the device manager, it says it is working fine.

follow Rich's advice. then move the connetions around on the back of the router to make sure the port is ok and change a cable too if  you can.

Guess I missed that part in the original post. If it works with the modem then it is enabled. There is the possibility that this particular modem does not like win 7. Still have my thinking cap on though as it should work to my thinking.

Perhaps i should just get a new router?
