Inspiron 4000 LCD problem
I have an Inspiron 4000 that was kept in a port replicator 95% of the time. About a year ago it flat out died. Nothing would work and it had a burnt electronics smell. I replaced the motherboard and everything worked except the LCD, and this is where it gets wierd.
Upon turning on the computer, the LCD backlight momentarily lights (no text or dell splash screen) but then goes black. I can't make out any characters (as if the backlight were bad but the LCD was still operational). The laptop then shuts off itself after approximately 10 seconds.
The video out off both the laptop itself and through the port replicator still work. I replaced the LCD display and it still had the same symptom. I then pulled the graphics card out of the old motherboard replaced it in the new motherboard and it still has the same symptoms. The last thing I've replaced is the cable (625FR) and the LCD still has the same problem.
I've tried booting with an external monitor connected, then disconnecting the external monitor but the display doesn't do anything--not even the momentary flicker.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply.
I believe the inverter was replaced with the display. If I'm not mistaken, the inverter has it's own connection behind the LCD panel and is in the small circutboard on the display (just behind the Dell logo on the display). If I am mistaken and the inverter is somewhere else, please let me know.
Also, I've been troubleshooting this all afternoon. Everything not needed is out of the laptop--the modular bays and PCMCIA slots are empty, the hard drive is out, the internal modem is disabled, everything that doesn't have to do with this display (serial ports, etc)is disabled in the BOIS to narrow down what could be causing this problem.
In an odd turn of events, I've got the display to work but not on it's own. If I turn on the laptop, the LCD flickers, then I plug in an external monitor and hit Fn-F8 (the CRT/LCD button), the monitor doesn't come out of powersaving mode. The laptop goes through its POST (I presume, neither dispay is active at this point), then it beeps twice to let me know there is no boot device. If I disconnect the monitor and hit the Fn-F8 again, the LCD turns on. I'm stumped--never seen anything like this before.
If I boot the laptop with the monitor connected and wait until it tells me there's no boot device and I hit Fn-F8, the monitor flickers a bit but the LCD never initializes. I've also upgraded the bios to the newest version (A23) but that hasn't helped...
