Inspiron 4000 - removing certain programs

Question

Our non-profit has a 5-year old 4000, Pent 3; 533Mhz; 128RAM; 4.5GB HD. It has not been used for a couple of years. I have just upgraded to Windows XP Pro, SP2 to better use our office Ethernet network. Without any productivity software, I have 613MB of free space remaining. Do I need to keep the following programs? Dell Internal Modem diagnostics tool; Dell Resolution Assistant; Dell Solution Center; WindowsXP uninstall. There is no 'stand alone' anti-virus program as we have Symantec corporate. Keeping in mind we use a hard wire network, and that I want to have the capabilty to use a wireless card, is there anything else I can dump? Thanks in advance - prmh30

First of all, you have very little RAM. You really need at least 256MB of ram for XP to run very effectively. You also have very little hard drive space. I don't know how you will be able to install any productivity programs with so little space left. You could uninstall the programs you mentioned. If you need any help, you can always go on line and load any diagnostic programs you need at the time. Go to systems tools on the all programs, disk cleanup and delete the temporary internet files. Also delete the history and cookies from internet options. I would go here and check for anything else you might delete. Hope this helps.

WOW. . a 533mhz . . ouch that is like my k6 processor on some of my old machines. .As far as I can tell you do not meet the min requirements that XP takes to load good.  Win 98SE would go good on that machine though.  WHY SP2?? Take that off lol  . . . it is huge and is not necessary. . .

The best solution to your problem is to replace the hard drive with a larger capacity one - any 2.5" 9.5mm thick notebook drive will work. Also concurr that you should have at least 256MB memory for your Win XP to be happy. Your CPU can also probably be upgraded to at least 700MHz depending on your motherboard model number. Even though the laptop is old is a dependable rugged unit that still has lots of use for many folks.

You do not need the Dell Apps - the modem diagnostic tool can go, and Res Asst. hasn't been active (unfortunately!) for over 3 years. Solution Center is only info on the 4000 but could be dumped as long as you remember these forums! :smileyvery-happy:

I agree you should get a bigger hdd - I recommend the Seagate Momentus hdd here for the 4000 - I got my daughter one for hers and it was so quiet I thought it didn't power up! Look here for how to swap - don't forget the adapter at the end of the drive you take out.

These ram modules work in the 4000 and are the cheapest that work I've found. Get two to make the 4000 sing with XP. If you want to max the cpu on your motherboard, this one is as fast as it will take. I realize you are a non-profit, so the hdd and ram are the most important, and you will see a major increase in speed from them. The cpu would be icing on the cake. Do the others first and judge the value of the cpu.
