Inspiron 5000 Doesn't Boot

Hello,

Windows locked up on my Inspiron 5000 (not the first time) and after reconnecting the AC/Battery I got the following response:

1. The Hard Disk & Power LED illuminate and remain on although I can't hear any HD activity?
2. The fan comes on for a few seconds then goes off.
3. Blank LCD.
4. Laptop doesn't boot?

I have stripped the laptop down (it is out of warranty) to try and identify the problem but I am not having any luck. I have tried the motherboard with every possible combination of HD, FD, CD, Memory, Battery, AC. I have even re-seated all the components and rebuilt the laptop on several occasions but it still doesn't boot :-( I can however hear what sound's like a fan on the MMC-2 processor and it gets hot - Would I be correct in saying the CPU is OK?

The only thing I can think of now is to replace the motherboard but I'm not ready to take this route until I have explored all the other options.

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

All help appreciated.

Kind Regards

Craig

If your system will not power on try some or all of the following.
>Remove the ac adapter and the battery for two minutes then reconnect the ac adapter and try powering the system up.
>Remove the ac adapter, the battery, and the harddrive then put the harddrive back in and try it on ac power only.
>Try starting the system without the harddrive in the system.
>Remove hardware components one at a time and see if the system will start after that.

If the system will not power up with a certain hardware component install then that component may be faulty.
If the system will not power on no matter what, then the processor or motherboard may be faulty.

I have exactly the same issue , i have checked CPU it is OK, I am going to try another AGP board next week, i have tried every thing else, after vga only thing left is motherboard to be replaced, I am also suspicious about the memmory slot on motherboard as gold plating seems to be worn out although memory wasn't inserted many times

Other people seems to have same problem and looks these motherboards have manfacturing issue and dell is just not admiting  and if you are out warranty like me then BAD Luck and motherboard from dell will cost fortune
