inspiron 5000
Hey,
I own a dell inspiron 5000 PIII 600 with a 4mg video card installed on it. I have done some research and have found that it is not possible to upgrade this with the 16mg one offered in the 5000e. I am wondering though if it can be upgraded to the 8mg video card that was offered in the inspiron 5000. If so, how difficult would it be to replace my video card, I'd really like to at least upgrade it to 8mg to make dvd's run a little bit smoother. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!

i dont think 4 meg would make that much difference
but in theory its not too difficult to do.. youd be better seeing if someone owns one and has tried.

this is my first post!!!! signed up especally for you ekbelt!
it is possible to upgrade the inspiron i5k with a i5ke graphics card!!!
i used the ATI RAGE MOBILITY 128-M which is available as either 8mb or (what i have) 16mb; it also is a 2x AGP card so supports multi texturing!!! so yes you can play (up to) 2003 games i have medal of honor brekthrough on my i5k it runs on all the high settings (though i modded to laptop to run a CAD program)
the upgrade is hairy (its not for the faint hairted) as you have to fool the laptop into thinking its a i5ke (so as such the upgrade is definatly not supported by dell) and this inturn means that the moniter is blank (as the bios is looking for the new card, not the original [which in your case is a RAGE MOBILTY - P??])
p.s dvd playback is alot crisper!
DEFINATLY NOY FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!!!
if your serious bout doin this then email me: ukdick@hotmail.com
BE AWARE THAT IF YOU TRY THIS AND IT DOESN'T WORK YOU SHOULDN'T HOLD ME RESPONSIBLE
p.p.s you should research the forum first before posting, go here to see what the person how showed me how to do it said (by the way this man is a legend!!!):

Holy poop, that is awesome! I've got the 8MB Mobility, and I was trying to play Rise of Nations. Do not attempt this. Not only is it slow as molasses, but there are tons of graphical artifacts. I figured I was just out of luck, but then I thought maybe I could upgrade the video card. Now that I was searching and came across this posting, I am so totally going to do it. My Inspiron 5000 is way out of warranty and I don't use it for anything important anymore, and this may help to get that game at the very least playable. If not, at least I gave it a try. So, where can I get this video card?
On a side note, why is c.r.a.p considered profanity? Is John Ashcroft moderating this forum?!
EDIT:
I think I've found the part number, 66DJD. However, it does not show up anywhere on Dell's part search. I guess I'll have to call them up. A few websites are selling them for about $150, but I don't really trust them.
