Inspiron 5000e side volume controls

I just upgraded my Inspiron 5000 to XP and have the same problem. I will post a new message about the 5000 (not 5000e).

Just installed WinXP and lost side volume controls...

What about the solution to this problem?

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Dell never shipped the Inspiron 5000 with Windows XP installed on it.  I suggest upgrading the audio driver, with one from the vendor if needed, and also updating or resetting the system BIOS.

In the past Dell has told me that they could not do anything since this machine was never design for XP, which is why I was forced to use the drivers from W2K. Any time I have use the updated drivers from MS Windows Updates, I lose control of the volume controls again. I now ignore the audio updates since the W2K driver works fine.

I'm not sure what Dell means by resetting the BIOS. If this is a suggestion that may or may not work, then I would avoid playing with the BIOS for a simple audio problem. It sounds like a suggestion since Dell is suggesting upgrading or resetting? No thanks, but please let me know if someone tries it and it works?

Since the BIOS controls Basic Input and Output from the computer, I thought that updating this may help.

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town for Christmas. After checking my BIOS version, it appears that I already upgraded to the latest version, A08. This version is dated 5/21/2001 which did not help this problem. Is there another version that I'm missing? Will Dell create an updated version?
