Inspiron 5100 overheating

My Inspiron 5100 overheats after 20 minutes. Any suggestions?

Clean the heatsink with some compressed duster spray.

Yes I was having the same problem with my fan and it was causing my Inspiron 5100 to really overheat to the point of where it would continue to turn off on me. Clean the fan out with canned air and it'll fix up the problem.

My Dad also put a fan control program on my computer to help monitor the fan speed and computer temp, which is just something nice to use.

Thanks for the quick feedback and helpful pointers. I have also found out it is important to ensure the rubber stands found on the bottom of the laptop are in place (mine are gone!) This ensures the laptop has clearance form desk surface allowing for adequate airflow.   Additionally, I called Dell tech support today and was incorrectly informed that this issue is covered by a Dell extended warranty - it is not.   Cheers.   Andrew
