Inspiron 5100 - PXE-E61 Error

I have an Inspiron 5100 that the hard drive crashed. The machine began giving the PXE-E61; media test failure, operating system not found... Replaced hard drive... Problem is I can't get to the BIOS... I start the machine, try the F2 and the machine goes to the password input screen (I had it turned on). I input the password and go to the startup screen. Tried F12, tried del key... I know the right password... How can I get around it? I took the machine apart and checked for loose wires, etc... I realize it is trying to boot from the NET but I can't get into the BIOS to change to default... I AM AT A LOSS!

Thanks so much!

I realize what may be the problem... I have been using a PCMIA wireless card that no longer is working. The card works in another machine but does not in this one...Which means the socket where it plugs in is not working... ANybody have a clue on this? Something I can replace???

Thanks!

you could try removing a stick of ram and hope that after you enter your bios password the system will tell you that your memory has changed, prompting you to enter setup by pressing F2.

I suspect you have an old phoenix bios installed i.e. pre version A22. if this is the case, suggest you disable your bios password then flash bios A22 in the first instance and you problem with entering bios setup should end.

I also suggest you do the update in pure dos as, IMO, it's the safest way to do it.

That sounds great and I have the same problem.... So, running the risk of sounding dumb... but, HOW would you do all of that?
