Inspiron 6000 black screen upon bootup

After seeing the Windows XP screen, my screen goes blank. In order to see the screen, I have to close and open the monitor, and then the screen resolution is huge.

Any ideas?

Possibly a problem with the switch that detects whether the lid is open or closed. From reading the forums and comparing with my personal experience it seems as if several Inspiron models might have this kind of issue.

The switch does not seem to have an effect in VGA mode - so it won't affect what is displayed in the initial phases of booting, so the Windows logo will appear OK. However once the machine switches to regular graphics modes then the switch can disable the screen. The problem seems to be that the switch mechanisms can break or jam, leading the machine to detect the lid as closed when in fact it is open. And that is what switches off the display as soon as it gets to the stage in the boot process where Windows switches out of VGA and goes over to using the graphics card.

where can I find the switch that tells if the lid of open or closed on an Inspiron 6000 system?
