Inspiron 6000 doesn't sit flat

Question

My new 6000 doesn't sit flat on most surfaces. I have found one surface that it sits flat on. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this normal at all? I was wondering if it's because the base is too wide and so it just doesn't always sit flat.

I have noted that the back feet don't sit flush when the laptop is on a flat surface.

The 6000 is built with a thin plastic case bottom and a metal case top.

The metal is frequently formed improperly and when it's assembled to the plastic bottom it prevents the computer from sitting flat on a flat surface. It mimics being warped. If you sight along the side of the top from front to back, you'll see a curvature or upward curl in the metal top which should be flat but isn't. This pulls the plastic bottom up and off the flat surface.

Usually, the left front corner will rise off the table more as you tilt the screen further back. This is aggravated by the unbalanced 6000 chassis design that concentrates weight on the right side and the rear and has virtually no weight on the left front corner other than the flimsy optical drive mechanism.

If you want to be picky, you'll also note that when the screen is latched closed it continues to flop around because the hinges and latches were designed improperly and there is a big gap between the screen bumpers and the metal frame when latched closed.

Also, the metal top is painted white which, over time, is going to wear off and look really ratty.

The physical construction of the 6000 is a much cheesier design than its predecessors.

well this isn't encouraging. so there is pretty much no way to fix this imperfection? i just sent mine in to get it fix. are all of the 6000's warped, or are some of them actually made correctly, because i'm hoping they'll let me exchange it for a new one.

Well, I hate to disappoint you, but mine is perfect.

I closed the lid and shined a flashlight on all the rubber bumpers and they all touch the same amount - back ones, middle ones, and front ones.

Also, the entire laptop sits perfectly flat on my desk - I guess everything on this one is great.

that's actually good news for me because they promised to exchange it if sending it in doesn't fix it. i just got it back from service and not only does it still not sit flat, they also managed to put some stratches and small dent in my brand new laptop. those service guys just have no respect for other people's stuff, huh.

Ive got 2 6000's and both of them are fine. None of the problems mentioned here. I guess you just got a bum machine. It happens. If you just ordered a new machine, I wouldnt worry. Take it out, look at it...play with it. If it doesnt meet your expectations, send it back and get a different one.
