Inspiron 8600 boot failure
In the middle of a session in which nothing was installed and no changes were being made to my system, the OS froze. When I tried to reboot, the progress bar (BIOS screen) stopped about 95% of the way across and would not complete booting. I removed the laptop from the port replicator and booted from battery. This was OK. I put it into standby and put it back into the PR and woke it from stand by. This was also OK. Later, when I tried to reboot while in the PR it still would not pass the 95% mark. Any and all suggestions welcomed.

Remove the battery and unplug the system. Hold the power button for 30 sec. Remove and reinstall both memory modules and the hard drive.
Try powering up again. If it will without but not with the battery, the battery is bad.
If you still get nothing, remove the hard drive. If the system will then boot to a BIOS screen, the hard drive is bad.
