Inspiron as desktop replacement?
hello
i need a Notebook as desktop replacement, especially for gaming, and i found the inspiron 8600.
it is nearly perfect, ATI M10 Pro Turbo, 1,7GHz centrino,...... , but, the display is what keeps me waiting.
i don't know if new and old PC games support the strange 16:10 resolutions of 15,4" TFT displays.
is the notebook itself able to run standart resolutions such as 1024 x 768, by accepting a black boarder on both sides of the display? or is it impossible to run these resolutions, or do the games even support these resolutions?
i hope you can help me!

Don't know how it is with the ATI card, the nVidia driver support not to stretch the image. However, I prefer a stretched image over black borders when playing games. Withouut comparing to a 4:3 screen, you won't notice that the image is stretched.

Good idea but I still feel a desktop system is much better. I have 2 laptops and a desktop. You can purchase a less inspiron and a desktop for about the same price as some of the inspirons. I still enjoy using my desktop. I have a 17" LCD and 2.8gz pentium 4 processor with 1 gig of ram and hyper threading. I put the best Video card I could find in it and it's wonderful for games. I do have some of my games on my laptop for when I travel but there are many games that just don't give you the punch you get on the desktop.

yea I don't think ur gonna get ur Inspiron to be a desktop replacement, afterall, thats why I bought the i8200 but if you're gonna play Battlefield 1942 which is like my favorite game......its gonna run pretty bad if u dont run it at like low video mode. I think the major hang up is the video card b/c all of my friends that lug there desktops to lan parties, they have like 2.6-2.8 ghz processors and my i8200 has a 2.4, and while they have a gig of ram, 512 is enough. My friends all have like ATI 128mb cards in there systems and the best I or any other i8200's is a ATI 64mb..........unless ur willing to fork over $320 for a Quadro4 (still 64mb)......but like for $320 u can get a desktop 128mb graphics card and I doubt the Quadro4 compares with a 128mb video card........but i've never used one.......
EDIT- eh just saw the the i8600, supposedly my P4 2.4m in my i8200 compares with the 1.6-M, so maybe a 1.7-M with a 128mb card would be a great desktop replacement.........plus u can get for 1900........im tempted, now i just gotta sell my laptop
