Inspiron e1405 screen flickers wildly

Do you mean disable the Intel Wi-Fi hotkey? I've noticed this only happens when it's on battery power and they batter still holds a charge for hours so I don't think it's going bad.

I'm also having this problem. But I just can't seem to find out what is causing this problem... I just got my E1405/640m last February and ever since then I've had the screen flicker problem... It's really frustrating...

THIS WORKED!!!!! My e1405 had been having tons of problems every time I took it from AC to battery power, and I just unplugged it after going into the "Graphics Properties" (right click on the empty desktop...it's there if you've got the GMA945 software loaded). I turned off Intel's "Power Settings" features, disabled rotation (don't have a tablet, so don't need it), and unchecked the Hotkeys box. It's working perfectly now. Thanks for the tip...I'd asked about 4 different times today, and no one had answered me yet, so this is great.

Actually, I found out what was the problem with my system. Disabling screen rotation didn't do it. However, I had upgraded my Intel 945 graphics driver off the Dell site to the latest one - March '07 I believe. I have the latest version of MSN Messenger (Live) too. The problem only happened when I tried to log-in to MSN Messenger and was running on battery power. I played around and downgraded to the last release of MSN Messnger, put my laptop on battery power, and tried using MSN Messenger 7.5. It worked fine for a few days. I then upgraded back to MSN Messenger (Live) and the problem came right back. I ended up reversing my Intel driver to the former one and things have been working fine since then.

I tried all the given methods mentioned in the posts. But unfortunately it never worked for me. I am using dell 640m which i purchased just 2 weeks back. i am running WinXp-SP2. The screen starts flickering moment i plug out the charger cable.In case it doesnt then when i play any video, after closing the media player, screen starts flickering. The temporary solution i use is to put to stand by mode and then back to normal.

Even i faced this problem on my dell Inspiron 640m. The solution is to update your drivers for Intel display drivers from Intel site. The one available at dell site for at least 640m is buddy. I did a clean install of XP and installed the display drivers. It works fine.

Moreover if you have sigmatel audio card. Install the drivers in this order as mentioned below:-
1. Install XP and extract all the drivers provided by DELL on harddisk.

2. Install the patch from microsoft for KB888111 - Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000. Remember you wont get this as free hotfix from microsoft. To get this just extract the Conextant modem driver supplied in your driver disk or go to Dell driver download site and download this .exe for conextant modem. Once you extract you will see this patch.

3. Once the installation of KB888111 is finished. The Windows hardware will detect audio bus. Chose the option to install the drivers and give the path where you extracted the sigmatel audio drivers. The directory chosen should be WDM.

4. After this it will automatically say a modem on audio bus is detected. Then give the path for the extracted folder of conextant modem.

5. Then install the motherboard chipset drivers.

6. Then install the LAN card drivers

7. After this the Wi-Fi drivers

8. In the last install the latest drivers downloaded from the Intel site for the graphics card you have.

This should solve all you problems. In case you have Windows XP provided by Dell it may already have the KB888111 installed as default. But to be on safe side install it again.
