I have exactly the same problem and would have posted the same question yesterday but I had to get login approval for this forum. My Inspiron 1545 is less than two months old and the keyboard worked fine when we first got it. I seem to have the most problems when typing in gmail or on Face Book. Agree that none of the fixes I've seen on-line seem to address the issue. I cleaned the keyboard with high pressure air without any improvement. Anyone have any answers?
Try disabling your bluetooth. (I have had the problems with Media Direct but it effected word and outlook 2007 only for me). Disabling bluetooth also worked for me.
I've called to Dell Support Center today and the've solved my problem.
The girl told me that the problem was related to Internet Explorer 8. First we tried to update the Java, but it didn't solved the problem.
Then, we tried to remove the IE 8, but we couldn't find the software on the list to be removed. The idea was to install the IE 7. We tried to find a IE 7 to Vista, but we were unable to find it on the web.
As my notebook is new, i don't have any important file on it. So, we did a system restore to get the IE version back to 7.
After some hours testing, I've found no more problems.
Don't forget to set the windows update so that you can choose what update to be dowloaded. If you don't do that, the windows update will install the IE 8 again.
That will fix it for sure.. switching IE from 8.0 to 7.0.. However, if you don't know how to do that, I tried a different way and it seem to fix the error in IE 8.0 as well. I went and downloaded Firefox 3.5 and yeah, you will have a different internet browser, but at least it works. After downloading Firefox, I went back to my Internet Explorer, and tried it again, and it worked just fine after that.... So there must be something in Firefox that fixes IE 8.0 as well... I am not a computer whiz, and I don't have the time to try and find what specific file it is but for times sake I figure this is probably the quickest fix for anyone with this issue.. :) Hope this helps.
After a bit more research it seems that this is a problem with only one version of IE.
On my new dell laptop, I have two copies of iexplore.exe, one in program files and one in program files (x86), this is because in the x86 folder, windows puts 32 bit programs, the others go into the normal folder. Check your icon that launches IE and make sure its the normal program files folder and not the x86 and the problem should not occur.
A friend sent me hits from other forums regarding the dropped keystrokes issue. I haven't seen a fix that always works, but some people are reporting success by disabling certain add-ons in IE. I'm thinking that might be why a suggestion in this topic, to launch a different iexplore.exe, might sometimes work because that might essentially be turning off add-ons. Some people think Skype caused it, some say a recent javascript update fixed it, etc. Outside of a *true* fix by Microsoft, I don't know if there is a single fix out there, but you might find something that works for you in this topic or the topics that my friend sent me.
I have the same problem also. Actually ,HAD the problem. Dell support could not help. They had me discharge static from the battery once, and it worked for a day. Someone had recommended downloading firefox. I did. It seems to have fixed my IE7 also! I hope it stays fixed. And somehow, Dell support quits direccting people to "paid software support" for my 4 month old Inspron 15. Thanx to the person who suggested that fix.
Dell Support called me back on Friday and they connected and took control of the laptop temporarily. They changed things so fast that I could not keep track of what they are doing - they possibly ran a script, since this problem seems so widespread (they did reset a number of items in IE, however). Whatever changes they made corrected the problem. I was also told that Windows 7 would not have the problem (we'll see what happens when I upgrade). Based on their confidence in being able to correct the problem, and their ability to correct it, I would say that they are well aware of the problem.

This is also happening for me. Again it is only really for typing into online pages e.g.hotmail, facebook etc..
I did a search for any software related to Media Direct and could not find any on my Laptop.
Very frustrating..

for those users who aren't sure how to create a bat file, follow the instructions below:
cd c:\program files\internet explorer
iexplore.exe
exit
I've tried and tested this on two different laptops with IE8 and it worked for both.

I've found a solution. Issue lies with IE8 and is not just present on DELL machines but all machines. Seems the keyboard buffer doesn't work in IE8.
This fix worked for me when all the others didn't.
When I launch IE, i normally use start menu or quick launch icon. Keyboard issue occurs.
If I launch IE through the command line, I didn't get the keyboard issues.
I have no idea why this works but it does. Tested thoroughly (only reason I can type this much text with going mental).
Temp solution is to create a bat file that simply changes directory and runs iexplore.exe.
Hope this helps
