Inspiron m640 / E1405 video display problem

The display will not come on - everything prior to the ill-fated power-up was fine.

Indications show the computer is booting, but only a few vertical lines (.2" to .4") appear after about 60 secs of warmup time.  Tried to connect an external monitor, hit the Function-CRT/LCD buttons, but nothing appeared.

I fear the video electronics are dead.  I read that some Inspirons had video problems to the extent that a legal action has been filed - is my computer one of those affected by this problem?

Your help is appreciated - Thank you!

It's likely a dead video chip, which on this model means a new mainboard.  If you're in warranty, call Dell - if not, it's at your expense.

I also have a 640m and started having video issues today.  The screen display is extremely dim and seems to be displaying in reverse (black is white, etc.).  It is 2 months out of warranty.  Anyone here of similar issues?
