Some application is holding and not shutting down and keeping you from shutting off - scan for a virus, and get AdAware and Spybot from www.donwload.com

I am having the same issue.  That's what happen the 1st time I got online and every time.  It seem like it would not shut down when I am online for more than half an hour.  If I am online for 5 minutes or so everything is fine.  The system shut down correctly.  The odd part is this does not happen if I use wireless or ethernet.  This only happen when I use modem.  I do not believe it is the provider, earthlink, because if it is the provider issue, my desktop would not be able to shut down correct.  It just puzzle me.  I have Adaware install on my Inspiron 5160 along with a firewall. Can someone please help?

Here is some interesting info. I have another Inspiron 5100 and I installed AOL from Dell too.
Each time I shut donw the system with AOL being still connected or not, the system shuts it
down gracefully. So why 5160 has this problem, but 5100 doesn't?

Like the message above, I am only having this problem with modem, not wireless. So, it is obviously, not a spyware problem !!! Dell, is not being helpful either!!! Ive called a few times & really getting nowhere. All my respects to human race..........but is anyone left at Dell that talks english & knows computers!?????????

Thanks very muchg for your info. Do you think it is THE solution? I have McAfee installed on

both 5100 and 5160. The 5100 works perfectly. So why 5160 doesn't?

I also installed Spy Doctor and Spyware Eliminator and Giant Antispyware and

eliminated all adwares they could find. However the problem is still there.

It is also my observation that if you use computer for a while (surfing the net, for example)

after dial up, it is highly likely that the computer cannot shut down itself. Each time when

this happens, I have to forcefully shut it down by pressing the power button for a while.

Do you think it is likely to cause damage doing so? Thanks.

No it does not work if you disable Norton internet security.  I tried that.  Dell technical service even had me disable everything in the startup and the service tab or some other tab I do not recall and it did not work.  I even tried killing all the process that the system let me and it still would not shut down correctly after using my dial-up for a long period of time.

If the computer will not shutdown correctly, the hard drive will become corrupted.  When I first called them and told them this issue, they said this is the first complain they heard about the computer not shutting down correctly.  I even pointed out to them that other people have the same experience but they said it is just me.  Dell support had me disable everything that was running on the computer and that still did not shut down correctly.  Formatting the hard drive did not work either.  Dell support told me that they will get back to me and they never did several time.  I think they need more testing for this model and give us some money back for testing the product out for them.

i talked to dell tech suport. here is what i was told to do and i did:
start->run  type   msconfig
click startup tab
only check the following programs:
mcvsshld
mcagent
nvcpl
dllcmd32
microsoft office

uncheck all other programs.

after i did this, it seems the problem was gone. could you guys there verify whether this
works on your 5160?

have a question: after i did that, the computer only works in Selective Startup mode.
what does this mean in terms of computer performance? slower speed?

this is weird. i had no problem with 5100.
