Intel HD Graphics vs Nvidia video card
Hi,
I have a Lattitude E6420 with i7-2720QM cpu. Originally I purchased it with NVidia 512 MB video card (at this point don't know the exact model number), and was very disappointed when I saw Windows Experience Index give ratings
Graphics 6.1
Gaming graphics: 5.0
I had few issues with my laptop and a Dell tech came out to replace my motherboard, and by mistake he put in a motherboard with Intel HD Graphics video card (with 64MB). I was about to call Dell to complain when I (not sure why) updated the Windows Experience Index and got the following results
Graphics 6.4
Gaming graphics: 6.4
Needless to say I was very surprised to see this. I was under the impression that NVIDIA card is significantly better than Intel HD, and I liked the fact that it had 512MB (vs 64MB for Intel). At this point I am trying to decide whether to call Dell and complain and get another motherboard with NVIDIA card, or just leave it alone since windows seem to think what I have now is faster.
Can someone who has NVIDIA and Intel post some numbers you see from Windows Experience Index? I am very curious if other people are seeing the same thing. Also, anyone has any idea whether this actually means something?

That model is supposed to have a discrete video card along with the intel integrated graphics. Are you sure the Nvidia card is not still there? Check your Device Manager. You paid extra for the card. Make sure you still have it or contact Dell. BTW, some models must be manually switched to the video card using the Optimus utility. Your model is one of them. Check your manual.

Well, it seems as the more screen space I have, the worth the experience index is, which makes sense. I was hoping that there would be a way to improve it. If anyone knows of a way to improve performance of video card, I'd love to know

This is what I get for not doing my own research. You are correct - turning on Optimus technology in BIOS shows different video card in BIOS as well as increases Graphics index from 4.9 to 6.4. Now that you told me that and I have been playing with it, I notice the following. When Optimus is turned on in BIOS (and I see 6.4 index) - when I dock my laptop, my index changes back to 4.9 if I re-run the assessment. Why is that? Also, when I am docked, the Intel graphics icon disappears from my status bar as well. I use E-Port docking station with 2 24" monitors.
