Intel Pentium M?
ok i know there are intel pentium M processors and are being used in notebooks, but i just read somewhere that they are replacing intel pentium 4-m...my view of specs on the M is that so far they have low clock speed...or is the technology just so far superior on the chip that its just faster...?
"The scale of the Pentium-M has reached further than previously anticipated, as they are now used in place of the Pentium 4-M (and Pentium 4 in some cases) for desktop replacement notebooks. Dell’s latest Inspiron refresh is indicative of this.
how is pentium M faster than pentium 4? point me to where i can read about this new processor!

Well, it's true that the PM are replacing the P4M in laptops. The basics are the the PM is a tweaked Pentium III which add the best parts of the P4 to the P3 and take the clock speed past the old levels. The Pentium 4 is a grossly inefficient chip relative to its speed (the celerons are downright shameful) and it's something that AMD users have known with their Athlon XPs being rated by MHz and the comparable P4 Speed.

This article gives an overview of the Pentium M chip

This article gives a performance comparision of various desktop chips, further explaining the inefficiencies in the P4 and Celeron4 design.

Multiply P-M Speeds by 1.6 to get the P4-M equivalent, however, under certain conditions the P-M will perform better or worse than it's P4-M equivalent (kinda contradictory statement there but you got what i said ; ) )
P-M P4-M
1.7 2.72
1.6 2.56
1.5 2.4
1.4 2.24
1.2 1.92
1 1.6

interesting enough the quote i put in my first post was from anandtech. i didnt know they were so renown i just came across them while browsing.
also why is the clock speed so low for the pentium M. why doesnt clock speed matter, why have fast clock if it means nothing. example the Celeron 2.8 ghz is not as fast as a Amd athlon xp 2500+ which is 1.83 ghz and sells for below 90 u.s it is like twice as fast as that celeron chip.
how much does clock speed really count for?

A CPU's preformance is usually only rated by clock speed and generation (ie, P4 2.2GHz) however, there are other factors to consider such as Front Side Bus (FSB), L1 and L2 cache size, archetecture, and other "features" such as 3DNow! (AMD) MMX (Intel) and so fourth. These can dramatically speed up the processing power of your PC.
As for Anandtech, as with all web sites, take what they say with a grain of salt. :p
