keyboard, text problems with Inspiron 8100

Question

Have Inspiron 8100, Win XP Home Ed.  Could not key in certain letters like b, h, d.  Must have also messed Dell Touch Programmable keyboard.  Now all texts in Active & Inactive Title bars, Icon, Menu, Message Box, Palette. selected items, tool tip  are garbled, appears as $$//@//A**. I suspect BIOS corruption.  Need help.

The keyboard isn't programmable. Boot the Dell Drivers and Utilities CD and test the keyboard.

Boot ... how?  If within Windows I can't read through the steps because of the garbled texts. Change Boot sequence in Setup then boot on that CD?  I am not tech savvy, sorry.

Insert the CD, power on, press F12 and load the diagnostics (boot the CD) from the CD.
