Laptop Cleaning/Vacuum
I own a SmartPC 250N (for some reason its board insists i haven't verified my email yet, which is why i'm posting here) and have suffered the heat problems widely reported. I am too chicken to follow the drastic solution of taking the machine to bits and fixing the thermal compound. It is my only machine on which I am doing lots of important uni work - yes it is all backed up, but I have project deadlines in a few weeks which means i can't afford to be without a machine for any length of time at the moment.
Anyway, I want to follow the alternative suggestion, which is attacking it with compressed air (can or gun) or a vacuum. My previous attempt with compressed air can seemed to shift little dust, perhaps because of the distance from the fans to the vents. What safety (static) implications are there for me taking a vacuum cleaner to it? Some online articles recommend a small battery powered model but they are typically referring to cleaning desktops (i.e. with the case off) - i doubt they'd have enough power to work from outside the case. Also, I assume the static risk is reduced if i am operating from outside the case. Or will it work at all?
If anyone has any advice/tips to cure my paranoia i'd be very grateful...

Using a vacuum cleaner to clean the dust from your laptop would probably generate more static electricity than the system can handle. Use of an air compressor to blow the dust and dirt out is also ill advised. Components in laptop systems are generally not as physically durable as those in desktop systems. They have to be much lighter than their desktop counterparts. The concept of blowing the dust out with canned air is probably the best option that you have. Air will flow in both directions through the ventilation system in your portable. If the dust will not come out one way, try the other.
