laptop speakers don't work
From: .Mark.
Inspiron 700m
Wndows XP Home
Video Card: IntelR 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
Sound Card: ?Sigma Tel Audio? (Don't know if that's correct)
I've been plugging into the headset plug on the front of my laptop and hearing audio through desktop speakers. I've gotten really nice sound, whether it's a CD, a DVD, an audio stream from NPR, etc. Unfortunately, the laptop speakers no longer operate when I unplug the desktop speakers and simply want to hear something over the laptop speakers. I've gone to Control Panel and checked out all the sound and audio connections I can find. All the volume controls are appropriately set. Any ideas? Have I somehow hurt the laptop sound system by using the headset plug-in in this way?

Your 700m has a Sigmatel STAC 9750 audio system. In that model there is no software switching that I am aware of, just the usual mechanical spring-leaf contacts in the jack. When the plug is removed the contacts should spring back together to restore signal routing to the speakers. If that failed to happen it would explain your symptoms. Less likely is that the palm rest connection has come loose. It can be found by removing the keyboard.

I don't know what I was thinking of in my earlier reply. This is most likely the correct answer:
There is a problem with the speaker wires breaking that only happens in the 700m. The sound through the speakers stops working but often you can hear some audio through the speakers when the screen is partially closed. The sound should still work okay through the headphone jack. There are a bunch of threads about this.

Here is another one that says Dell will fix this and has a link to luke miller's pics

This is a link provided by Red Dragon for contacting Dell to get this fixed at no charge:

Dell doesn't officially acknowledge this defect so to get it fixed you apparently have to be lucky to contact someone with a sympathetic ear at Dell.
