laptop will not chkdsk

Question

Greetings,

Because of McAfee freezing on a certain file several times, I was advised to check my disc with chkdsk. I have not been able to. I have tried C:properties, schedule later. I have tried command prompt, I have tried elevated level command prompt,all with no luck, it just doesn't work. I tried a website that said to check the drivers for one that wouldn't allow chkdsk, and I couldn't find a driver that wouldn't allow it. I did F8 on bootup and did"repair the computer" and everything was fine. I defragged.

Start with an extended - not just quick - hard drive diagnostic.  F12 at powerup.

I did the F12 and clicked on'diagnostic' , there were no other diagnostic choices, it ran and I didn't see any problems, although I don't know of a log to check. However,chkdsk still does not work. Everything else works ok. What else? Thanks, Jim

Yes, I have tried in safe mode with no luck. I guess I'll try the Vista cd, is the recovery console what I need to look for? thanks, Jim

Have you tried to run chkdsk through 'Safe mode?'   Chkdsk C:\ /F

Just double checking how you're trying this.

Start, all programs, accessories. Right click on the command prompt, left click run as administrator. Type

chkdsk /r (space between the k and /)

Hit enter, then answer with a Y

Restart your computer.

Yes,I have tried that many times. Just like everything else I have tried, it just boots normally!

I was just trying the Vista cd, and I could not find the recovery console,it just wanted to install again, any suggestions?

Jim,

If you want to reinstall again, I first recommend that you make copies of file and folders that you cannot afford to lose. This should be a normal practice.

Same problem here.. Studio XPS 1340 with W7 Professional.

Wanted to do a clean install. Checkdisk doesn't work. In bootup a countdown starts for 10 sec. to start chkdsk. When it hits '1', nothing happens. Laptop locks up.

Only holding down the 'on' button shots it down. Everything else works normal. No problems at all.

I made a second partition to store data. When I right-click on that partition to try that one, it works!

So chkdsk on the C-partition (OS) doesn't work. Chkdsk on second partition does!

Hi Rick,

Do I HAVE to reinstall to use the cd for repair and/or recovery.What/where is the recovery console? I didn't see any other choices. Also,I have backed up to an ext hd several times and it says it was successful,however, what should I see when I open the "F" hd. In other words, how do I make sure that it was successful.

I assume making copies and backing up is the same thing.?

I am using Vista Home Premium 32bit

same exact problem here for me. It freezes every time i restart my computer. gets to one second and freezes.

Were you able to find a solution? How can I stop the damn chkdsk from running every time i restart my computer?
