Latitude boot problem

I have latitude CPXJ 750MHz. Its battery doesn't hold the charge so I always run it on AC power. It was working fine few days ago. But suddenly it stopped working. When I boot it, Power and disk light blinks for a second and all three (scroll, caps, num) lock lights stay on. After 4 seconds, computer looses the power. I don't understand what's the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You may have two unrelated problems, as far as the battery not charging and the system not booting go.  For the boot problem, try removing and reseating the CPU.  You'll more than likely have to refer to the service manual for the system, for the safest and most efficient method of accessing the CPU, but there's a diagram for performing this operation on a CPi system that might help somewhat, and you can view that by clicking here.

Thanks both of you for your responses. I tried that but no luck. I removed CPU module and then placed it back. But problem still persists. Any other solution? As my laptop is more than 3 yrs old, Dell support is not available. Thanks!

Have you spoken with Dell about service?  Unless they've changed something in the last week or so, they'll service any product out of warranty - they just won't do it for free, like they would if you have a current warranty/service contract.  You ship it to them after making arrangements with Support by phone, they give you an estimate for repairs, and you make the decision from there.  I imagine there's a bench fee for tearing it down/troubleshooting, even if you elect to not have them fix it.

Interestingly, the Inspirons have this problem too, a widely reported issue.

See

and all the treads mentioned in that message.
