Latitude D600 DST Short Test Err Code 1000-0141
Suddenly, my laptop was telling me that it detected no drive. Got the error code above, so I assumed the hard drive was toast. Installed a new hard drive, and still getting the same error.
I've been told it could be the motherboard....or the motherboard battery?
I've never worked with a motherboard before. Just general easy install stuff. Would this be hard to do?
Anything else it might be that could be a little easier?

;^) Replacing the motherboard battery (aka CMOS battery, real time clock battery, etc.) is done easily. The battery is usually sized and shaped like a small coin, and fits into a socket on the motherboard. Remove it and note the numbers/markings on it. This will allow you to buy an identical one from any place that sells camera stuff or other electronics. Then, replace it.
:^/ For older laptops, this battery powers the volitile RAM that the BIOS chip uses to store its settings it. When it runs down, the BIOS cannot remember how to access the hard drive, etc.
In your place, I'd try replacing that battery before the motherboard; it's much cheaper....

Before doing even that, look at the back of the new drive. Did you transfer the black blade adapter from the original drive to the pins on the new one? If not, the drive is not connected to the mainboard, which is why you're seeing that error.

Black blade adapter? I'm pretty ignorant at this. I put the drive inside the "case" that the old drive had been in. But not sure what you're talking about. Thanks!!!!

On the back of the original drive is a black strip connector. Pull it off the drive (gently) and place it the same way over the pins on the new drive (it's keyed so it fits only one way). Without that strip, the drive isn't connected to the system board so you won't see it.
Be careful - the pins on the drive are flimsy and easily bent or broken.

Any tips on how to replace the motherborad battery?
I have an old Lattitude D600 and I also got the DST Short Test Error Code 1000-0141, and if this problem may be solved by replacing the battery it could be worthwile to do.

Two separate issues - the error means the drive is indeed failing, and should be replaced ASAP, as it hasn't long to live.
