Latitude D630 configuration

I am in the market for a new laptop and I have some questions regarding my configuration for primarily business use. I plan on keeping this unit for a number of years. I don't plan on upgrading to vista anytime soon. Both versions are about the same price new in the box from dell's outlet.

Is it better to save your money on a dedicated graphics card and upgrade memory? Should I spend the extra dollars and upgrade to a T7300 2.0 processor? Is the WXGA+ screen resolution better than standard?

What about a standard wireless card vs dual band or the new draft standard? Will a standard card fit 90% of my wireless needs?

1.8 gig core 2 duo processor
1 GB of RAM
128 meg dedicated video card
120 gig 7200 hard drive
Standard wireless card
XP pro
Blue tooth
WXGA+ screen

VS

1.8 gig core 2 duo processor
2 GB of RAM
Integrated graphics
80 gig 7200 hard drive
Dual band wireless card
XP pro
Blue tooth
WXGA+ screen

The 2nd option is my choice

THe 2.0 processor isn't that big of a deal, most office applications run fine on integrated graphics.

Definitely 2 GB RAM

Standard Wireless will be fine

I was just faced with the same question. IMHO, saving on processor and video for a laptop you plan on keeping for a number of years is simply false economy. At some point you are going to want or need something better.

You can pretty easily upgrade RAM and hard drives later, but not so with a processor or video card. I spent my money on the 128 MB video card and went with the 2.2 processor. I have Vista, so less than 3 weeks into ownership I am upgrading to 4 GB of RAM. Using this same line of reasoning, I used a Latitude D400 for almost 4 years.

Thanks for your responses. I found via dell's refurbished site a new in the box d630, XP Pro, WXGA+ screen, with the T7100 1.8 core 2 duo, I gig of RAM- 1 DIMM, 128 video, standard 24 CD RW/ DVD R, 120 gig 7200 HD, blue tooth, standard touch pad, 6 cell standard battery, 1390 G wireless card, 3-year mail in warranty. $1009.00 -1093.00 with tax delivered. I bought a second 1 gig memory module from Dell for $70.00 and I figure for under 1200.00 I have what I need. I would have liked the T7300 but being I wanted a "deal" I had to compromise.

This was after a month of jacking around with vague vendors on eBay and every day perusing dells refurbished site. Beware of rip-off's on eBay. Configured on dells small biz site I saved close to 300.00. I can always upgrade my warranty later.

I got so giddy with my purchase, I called Dell's customer support to confirm if the unit was configured with 1 DIMM memory and the rep offered to up grade my shipping to next day at no charge. That was on 10-4, the laptop shipped on 10-5- can't wait to see if it comes on in Monday.
