Latitude E5440 headphone jack

I just realized that my headphone jack is not working as my computer fell out of warrantee. I missed calling Dell by 7 days. The internal speakers work fine but whenever I plug in any known working device into the headphone jack I get no sound. I ran the F12 audio test a couple of times and I got nothing out of either the internal speakers or the external speakers I was using for the test. Other than that everything appears to be working. From what I read on the community support page below if this was a failed sense pin I should have heard sound through the speakers. Right?

When I was on the phone with Dell they did tell me it was a hardware problem but since the machine was a few days out of warrantee there was nothing they could do. I did do some looking on the forums and found this page http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19345854 listing laptops with replaceable headphone jacks but did not see my Latitude E5440 listed. Needless to say I am in somewhat of quandary. Is it a sense pin? Is it fixable? Do people fix these things?

Does anyone have any suggestions of what my problem could be, other than not catching this while it was under warrantee? Is this something worth taking to an external fix it shop? Or am I looking at costs that would exceed the original purchase?

I did order an external USB to audio stereo adapter to see if that would give me a fix but it will not come for a few days.

What really bothers me is that I think this failed well before the warrantee expired and that by a matter of a few days Dell support just walked away and blew me off.

Is it a sense pin?

Hello. If it were the sense pin issue then you would have the opposite symptoms -- no audio through speakers but the headphone jack working okay. A failed sense pin would prevent the audio from going to the speakers.

It could be a buggy Realtek audio driver. The way to test for that is to switch to the Windows native audio driver (assuming that you are currently using the Realtek driver, not the native one). If the headphones work okay with the native driver then try a different version of the Realtek driver if one is available.

1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]

I ran the F12 audio test a couple of times and I got nothing out of either the internal speakers or the external speakers I was using for the test.

Did you use the ePSA diagnostics and check the box "Perform Quick Audio Check"? That tests the speakers, which you know work, so they should not fail the test.

Thanks for the response. I am back up and running.  It was the driver.  I did swap out the Realtek driver (dated May 2014) for the the native driver and the headphones worked.  I next went back to the May 2014 Realtek driver and nothing.  I next tried a Realtek driver dated Dec 2013 that was on the machine. It is not work either. I then tried the last last Realtek driver on the machine dated August 2013.  It worked.  Interestingly, the only time I was asked to reboot was with the December and August Realtek drivers, not the native driver nor the May 2014 Realtek. Apparently the headphones stopped working a while back whenever the driver updated.

Some lingering questions.  Should I bother to look online for a more updated Realtek driver that would work?

Is it worth finding the two drivers that did not work and deleting them from my machine?

I think what threw me off was when I checked the driver and properties the machine told me it was functioning properly and was the most up to date.  I now know that those messages really do not mean anything.

I do not recommend updating audio drivers unless there is a specific reason to. When you have one that works and is stable stick with it.

Probably not.

I sort of agree. Device Manager is about the device driver more than the device itself, and it is not a diagnostic tool. When it says a device is working that mostly means that the driver is installed and is able to detect the device. If the audio hardware were totally fried then the driver would not be able to detect it and would present a yellow bang in Device Manager, but even then you would not know if the device was totally damaged or if there was a problem with the driver.

KED--I wish I could remeber what I did for a fix but it was a while ago. somthing tells me that it was a driver and configuation issue but I cannot remember for sure. I know before I figured it out that I did buy a USB that I could plug my speakers into but I did ultimately get the speaker port to work. sorry I could be of more help.

I change to "High Definition Audio" (the native driver), and now completely silent. Can't hear anything both from speakers and earphones.

After not using a splitter cable for the audio and mic for a long time I found it was not detecting the jack insertion and so it was impossible to enable the headset mic.

After checking for driver updates, it started working again after installing the latest Intel Management components driver...?!?
