Latitude E6330 temperature higher than E6320 when idling
hi,
I've just bought a Latitude E6330 (TAG <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> ) core i5 3320M, SSD 256 GB, 8GB RAM, that I compared to my older E6320 (TAG <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> ) core i7 2620M, SSD 128GB, 4GB RAM. On the older NB, I had changed the wireless chip to intel 5300 vs intel 6205 and windows 8 pro 32b vs 7 pro 32b.
The OS and drivers of the E6330 were not up to date and I download/installed everything that was needed. For each of these mutiple processes, the fan was spinning and the back of the NB was getting hot. While idling, just connected to the net via WIFI and a speedfan window, the temperatures for both NB were close ~ 40-45°C even though CPU load seems a little higher when using W7 instead of W8. I decided to run the stress tests provided by DELL and comparde again the temps: the E6320 is the less noisy even though it gets really hot (92°C max) compared to the E6320 92°C max.
Are these results logical? I previously thought the E6330 should run cooler since having a lower frequency, less memory, a thinner process,no bluetooth chipset, .., and then be more silent: could there be a probleme with thermal paste, contact between CPU and heatpipes,...
Would be happy to hear your ideas before I get in touch with DELL through warranty.
Pierre

Sorry I made a mistake: the max temp on the 6330 is not 92°C but 87°C.

Hi Pierre,
You have mentioned that you have download/installed everything that was needed. Was the BIOS updated to A09 version? If not, please download and update the BIOS for Latitude E6330 from here and check if the fan noise and temperature is changed.
Note: Plug your computer to a good, working UPS before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to buy a new BIOS chip or buy a new motherboard.
Do reply with results.

dear Zohaib,
I do not have the notebook at the moment but I will check its BIOS this evening when back home. I generally work with the PC plugged to the AC power. I will let you know the results no later than tomorrow morning if any. Sincerely,
Pierre

dear Zohaib,
I have now the notebook E6330 in front of me and the BIOS really needed to be upgraded since it was 07. But it does not seem to reduce the temperature of the cores reported by Speedfan 4.49 since they remain between 45 and 50°C when the PC is idle. At maximal stress test, the temperature is a little higher (90°C) than with the previous bios and close to the one obtained with the E6320 (92°C). The fan noise seems comparable. Is it normal?
Sincerely,
Pierre

Hi Pierre,
As you mentioned you did not notice any big difference after updating the BIOS, I would like to know if you are observing any signs of overheating except for the test results in “SpeedFan” and during Stress test.
Does the system freeze while using for long durations? Does the area underneath the laptop or anywhere else too hot to touch?

hi Zohair,
there are no signs of overheating when the notebook is idle: room temperature is 20°C and the pc's temperature is acceptable for my hand palm and thighs probably about ~35°C (Temp1 reported by speedfan is 34°C) . Since I bought it recently second hand, I have not installed a lot of software then I cannot compare with the other notebook except when idle, updates or stress tests. Regards,
Pierre

Hi Pierre,
As you mentioned you have purchased the computer second hand, I would recommend cleaning the air vents of the laptop using a compressed air can to remove any accumulated dust. After cleaning continue to use the laptop and keep us updated with the status.

hi Zohaib,
I have inspected the vents and removed the base at the back: both were immaculate, showing no dust. I didnot want to go further and check the CPU thermal paste at this point: "dismantling" the notebook to gain access to the heat pipes seems a lengthy process for a non specialist.
Instead, I installed windows 8 64b and the software.
Regards,
Pierre

Hi Pierre,
As you mentioned the vents and the surroundings of the System fan are clean, indeed you did the right thing by not dismantling the laptop. Also, you have successfully installed the Operating System so it seems it is all good. Keep us posted if you need any further help.
