Latitude E6410 Hard Drive Replacement

I am getting a "critical hard drive failure" alert when running diagnostics on my Latitude E6410 laptop, so I purchased a new hard drive via the Dell website.  The site shows that the drive I purchased is compatible with my computer but when I attempt to install it using the disks that came with my computer, I keep getting errors and the installation cannot be completed.

The hard drive on this computer has had problems in the past, and I did successfully reinstall everything using these disks in the past.  I'm not sure why they are not working with the new hard drive.

The new drive is Dell 7200 RPM FIPS Self Encrypting Serial ATA 3 Hard Drive - 500 GB.

Any suggestions as to why this is happening and what I need to do to successfully install the new hard drive?

Hi Dfurtado,

Thanks for writing to us.

Please run the diagnostics to ensure the hard drive is fine. Also try another OS disc (safe side).

Please change the SATA operation is BIOS from AHCI TO ATA or visa versa and install again.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards

Thank you for your reply and sorry for the delaying in getting back to you.  I needed to set aside some time to follow your advice and it took several hours to run the diagnostics, then it took several attempts to get the old hard drive back up and running.

I ran the full diagnostics on the new hard drive and it passed everything.

When I had first attempted the installation, I saw the advice about changing the BIOS settings and I had already tried that but it still didn't work.  The factory setting was RAID and I tried both ATA and AHCI.  Neither helped.

I don't know where I would get another OS disc.  I only have what came with my computer when I purchased my computer.  I did try downloading the recommended drivers to a USP drive and manually uploading them but that did not help.

The discs that came with my computer are Windows 7 installation, two recovery discs, Dell Resource Media (webcam central), and Cyberlink PowerDVD.

I was able to get as far as installing Windows 7 after following some discussion board tips to get around a recurring error but once I tried to install the recovery discs I reach a dead end and Windows will no longer load.  I have tried reloading everything multiple times.

Any further help you can offer would be appreciated or if you can tell me how to get new discs that would also help.

Thanks!

Not sure if its possible, can you try the new HD on another machine and install the windows.
In the f12 menu, do you see an option related to UEFI ?? If yes, then disable the UEFI and re-load the windows.

Also, if there are two memory chips in the system, remove one memory and install windows again.

I do not have access to another computer to test the hard drive in.  This is getting beyond my "user level maintenance" ability.  I am not qualified to be rummaging around inside the computer.  I submitted a request to update my warranty so I can get some personal support over a week ago and no one has gotten back to me.  This computer was WAY too expensive to have had the number of problems I've had with it and it is really disappointing and frustrating not be able to get some personal support.

Thanks for trying but I can't keep stabbing around in the dark.
