Latitude e6410 (Windows 7)/amd64: Universal Serial Bus controllers Unknown Device
About 2 weeks ago the usb ports on my Latitude e6410/Windows 7/amd64 laptop stopped working. First it was just the upper port on the right side, then it was all of them. I can still charge using the usb ports.
I am at a loss. The system is continually popping up and beeping that "USB Device Unknown"
This is the info I've gathered:
---
Unknown Device
Device type: Universal Serial Bus controllers
Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)
Location: Port_#0001.Hub_0004
Device Status: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I checked the Microsoft pages and found suggestions to this problem (which seems to be a known problem) and did the following as suggested:
1) uninstalled the Unknown Device, 2) shut down, 3) removed power cord, and 4) restarted. At which time I got the following popup message
DRIVER SOFTWARE INSTALLATION ()
Device driver software was not successfully installed.
Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed.
Unknown Device X Failed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes I get the following message, also:
Unknown Device Properties
Device type: Universal Serial Bus controllers
Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)
Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0003
Device Status: Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have tried to update the driver for the unknown device manually, but the manager doesn't let me change the device type from unknown to usb so I can't figure out how to specify a usb driver for an unknown device.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can anyone help me? How do you reconnect a usb port to the computer?
Thanks for your help in advance!
Cindy

Hi abhipan,
Please run an online diagnostics and get back with the results. Please follow the steps below to run the test.
1. Open the link http://dell.to/11MXNII
2. Select ‘Hardware’ under ‘Dell PC Diagnostics’.
3. Select ‘USB’ under ‘Diagnostic Selector.
